Redact PDF

Black out private information so it is truly removed, not just covered.

How to redact a PDF

  1. Choose a PDF file.
  2. Drag over the parts to black out, or type a word or number and select Mark all matches.
  3. Check every page with the arrows, then select Redact and save.
  4. Download the file and share it instead of the original.

Common questions

Is the text really removed?

Yes. Every page with a mark is turned into an image with the black boxes burned in, so the text under them no longer exists in the file. Pages without marks stay unchanged.

Why can I not select text on some pages after redacting?

Those are the pages you marked. Turning them into images is what makes the redaction safe.

Does the search find everything?

It finds text that the PDF stores as text. Scanned pages and photos have no searchable text, so mark those by hand and always check the result.

Is my file uploaded?

No. Redaction happens on your device, which matters most for private documents.
